Foundations Of Grace is Volume One of a five-part series and to say that this volume is a formidable undertaking is an understatement.

“The Calvinist is the man who has seen God, and who, having seen God in His glory, is filled on the one hand with a sense of his own unworthiness to stand in God’s sight as a creature, and much more as a sinner, and on the other hand, with adorning wonder that nevertheless this God is a God who receives sinners.” ~ Benjamin B. Warfield

It is almost 600 pages of the historical and theological journey defining and expounding on the Doctrines Of Grace. With Scripture as the foundation, Dr. Lawson maps out the rich and undeniable understanding of God’s sovereignty in all things and most assuredly, our salvation.

“Subject to none, influenced by none, absolutely independent; God does as He pleases, only as He pleases, always as He pleases. None can thwart Him, none can hinder Him.” ~ A.W. Pink

Foundations Of Grace intertwines the timeline of mankind tethered to the Doctrines of Grace from the teaching of Moses in the Pentateuch to King David of the Psalms to The Disciples and Christ himself in the Gospels as well as Apostle Paul and John.

And it continues with the faithful men who maintained the Biblical teachings of the Doctrines Of Grace from early Church Fathers like Augustine to the light of Anselm in the Dark Ages to the forerunners of the Reformation like Wycliffe and Tyndale to the Reformers like Calvin and Luther onto Knox and The Puritans like Burroughs and Henry to modern defenders like Warfield, Machen, and Boice.

“Absolute sovereignty is what I love to ascribe to God. God’s sovereignty has ever appeared to me, a great part of His glory. It has often been my delight to approach God and adore Him as a sovereign God.” ~ Jonathan Edwards

Drawing out Scripture along with commentaries garners the reader’s attention to grasp the Truths of God’s Word and surrenders the believer to a humble and profound understanding of God’s Grace and Mercy not only in our Salvation but in life and death and ultimately, eternity.

Dr. Lawson’s craftsmanship in this work brings depth and comfort to the believer and Glory to God as the Author and Finisher of our faith.

“I believe by my own reason or strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him. But the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, and sanctified and preserved me in true faith.” ~ Martin Luther

As each godly man is visited throughout this work, being that they each taught the Doctrines Of Grace, the information will be repetitive at times but that is necessary to be faithful to God, His Word and the men for whom this book documents. It is to declare that God’s Grace and Sovereignty is immutable and unmistakable.

Foundations Of Grace is written with succinct conviction and an unwavering devotion to God and His Word and the men who He calls as His own.

“The old truth that Calvin preached, that Augustine preached, that Paul preached, is the truth that I must preach today or else be false to my conscience and my God. I cannot shape the truth, I know of no such thing as paring off the rough edges of a doctrine. John Knox’s gospel is my gospel; that which thundered through Scotland, must thunder through England again.” ~ Charles H. Spurgeon

Though lengthy, this volume is written with the layman in mind, making it comprehensible and applicable. As an added benefit, there are study questions provided at the end of each chapter.

Suffice it to say, Dr. Lawson, knows of what he speaks, as he has joined a long line of godly men.

“The Church desperately needs men who are proclaimers of the full counsel of Scripture. Any true exposition of the Bible will inevitably point to the transcendent truth of God’s right to rule over all the works of His hands. If such men would be found faithful before God, they must concern themselves with declaring these ancient doctrines of God’s eternal grace.” ~ Steve Lawson
